David Gregg and the History of the Optical Disk

David Gregg and the History of the Optical Disk An optical plate is a plastic-covered circle that stores advanced information. Little pits are carved into the circle surface that are perused with a laser filtering the surface. The innovation behind the optical circle is the establishment for similiar designs including CDs and DVDs. David Gregg The optical circle is a simple video optical plate group. The first arrangement gave full data transfer capacity composite video and two simple sound tracks (computerized sound tracks were included later). The optical plate (generally referred to as the laser circle as trademarked by Pioneer) was supplanted in notoriety by the presentation of DVD in 1997. David Gregg Speaks on the Invention of the Optical Disk ...By impairing an electron bar to obvious frequencies, adjusting it to the standard PWM video recurrence, and lessening the ability to photoresistive prerequisites, an e-pillar optical videodisk acing framework was commonsense and monetarily accessible in the late 50s. In any case, this basic and handy methods for acing was relinquished by others for all the more exorbitant and time postponing innovation: the laser, the incomparable toy existing apart from everything else for nerds. Effect of David Greggs Patents Computerized Versatile Disk or DVD and LaserDisc from PioneerMiniDisc from Sony Compact Disk or CD from Philips the 3M Company Rundown of Patents for Optical Disk Technology Proceed with Extract from Optical Disk Patent Unique much gratitude goes to Tom Peterson for giving data to this page including the expressions of David Gregg. David Gregg was Toms father by appropriation. A straightforward plastic plate is portrayed in the Copending Application Ser. No. 627,701, presently U.S. Pat. No. 3,430,966, gave March 4, 1969, in which picture data as video signals is recorded on one or the two sides of the circle. The recorded picture data on the circle is planned to be replicated, for instance, through a TV input, by playing the plate on a turntable and by coordinating a light shaft through the circle, as depicted in the Copending Application Ser. No. 507,474 currently, surrendered, and its continuation to some degree application, presently U.S. Pat. No. 3,530,258. The light shaft is balanced by the video chronicles on the circle, and a get head is given which reacts to the subsequent light motions toward change them into relating electrical video or picture signals for playback purposes. The current innovation is worried about such a video circle record, and with a duplication procedure by which a variety of such records might be mass-delivered from an ace record bite the dust. The material of the plate record surface is made such to be proper for decorating and to empower, under appropriate temperature conditions, a slight power squeezing the circle surface against an ace kick the bucket to cause the impacts on the outside of the pass on to be emblazoned into the outside of the circle. With such a decorating procedure, there is no transverse progression of the plate material, as happens in the standard earlier craftsmanship stepping or shaping procedures, as are by and by being utilized in the creation of phonograph sound records, for instance, and by which the genuine surface of the record is raised over its liquefying point. The stepping methods by and by being utilized in the assembling of phonograph records are not reasonable for the uncommonly fine microgrooves and examples required by video recurrence accounts of picture data. Such stepping methods as are directly being utilized in the creation of phonograph sound records necessitate that the ace record bite the dust be warmed to a temperature over the softening purpose of the vinyl or other plastic material utilized in the phonograph record. In the earlier workmanship phonograph record copying process, a roll of the vinyl or other plastic material is put in a stamper, and the warmed ace record pass on is cut down onto one or the two surfaces of the bread. The plastic of the scone surface is dissolved and caused to stream radially into the spaces characterized by the impacts on the ace bite the dust surface. As referenced over, this stepping method by present day guidelines gives off an impression of being unsuited for the incredibly fine miniaturized scale winding sections required for video recurrence chronicles. As an option in contrast to the current day practice, and as will be portrayed, a video circle record clear of overlaid straightforward plastic development might be given, the covered record having a surface layer of moderately delicate straightforward plastic of any reasonable known sort, and which can be promptly decorated; and a supporting base of an unbending plastic, for example, an acrylic tar or polyvinyl chloride. As an initial phase in the substitute methodology, the covered plate record clear is warmed to a point where the surface pressure of the surface material makes the surface be smooth and standard. This temperature is the basic temperature at which embellished impressions might be framed on the plate surface, and it is underneath the liquefying purpose of the surface material. The emblazoning die(s) is(are) warmed to a temperature somewhat over the basic temperature, and it(they) and the record clear are united with a slight weight. As the die(s) and the record clear are united, the die(s) is(are) cooled to the aforementioned basic temperature, and its (their) surface impressions are decorated into the surface(s) of the record. Clearly, if different sides are being embellished, two decorating kicks the bucket are required. The supporting structure would require alteration, however such adjustment is well inside the ability of the craftsmanship. After the circle record has been decorated, as portrayed over, a hazy cover is saved into the parts of its surface around the subsequent emblazoned miniaturized scale grooves. This last cover might be shaped on the circle by utilizing a vacuum affidavit method, as will be portrayed. The previously mentioned circle record, when covered as per the aforementioned exchange approach, is utilized so as to introduce the ideal surface attributes for ideal decorating capacities, but with the goal that the record itself might be tough and reasonable for unpleasant utilization. The covered structure of the record includes sensibly intense and dimensionally stable away from for the fundamental body of the circle; and a plastic material on one or the two surfaces of the plate which is generally appropriate for embellishing. The mix gives a video record plate which is valuable, which can take on fitting measure of taking care of, which despite everything can be embellished effectively and viably.

Build a Better Brainstorm A Guide to Inclusive Team Meetings

Build a Better Brainstorm A Guide to Inclusive Team Meetings We like to think that we operate our businesses as meritocracies. Good ideas get heard, and people with good ideas get rewarded. But what if that wasn’t exactly true? Take the classic business meeting. You’ve got a problem you need to solve, so you throw the floor open to ideas, take the best ones, and run with them. What could be better? But think about who participated. It’s anything but equal. The fact is, in a typical eight-person team meeting, on average only three people do  70 percent of the talking. Those are the people who are comfortable in the meeting format you’ve chosen. Everyone else would participate more under different circumstances. It doesn’t mean that the quiet participants’ ideas are bad. It might just mean that they’re newer to the group and less confident. Or that they’re introverted and dislike fighting for attention. Whatever the reason, it’s not because they or their ideas lack merit. It’s because the meeting structure arbitrarily plays to one group’s strengths and another’s weakness. Ignoring these differences hurts the productivity of your meetings and could hamstring your organization’s prospects for success. In this article, Ill share how you can make your team meetings more inclusive, over a few simple stages. Achieving Inclusive Excellence There is a recent term in higher education that crystalizes why brainstorm meetings should play to everyone’s strengths. It’s called inclusive excellence. It’s the idea that a team cannot be at its collective best unless each member of the team is performing at his or her individual best. The concept builds on the established premise that diversity in teams is a good thing. There is more than one way to think about a problem, and having a diversity of ideas and  healthy debate around those ideas leads to better results. That notion of healthy debate is central to inclusive excellence. Having an inclusive team with diverse viewpoints is good. However, pairing that diversity with a structure that allows those viewpoints to be voiced and heard is what really moves the needle toward excellence. Identifying personality types on your team One basic aspect of diversity is personality â€" specifically, introversion versus extroversion. In business, it’s mostly an extrovert’s world. Core components of corporate life â€" including those decisions about how we run meetings â€" were designed around extroverts. They are so established now that you might not even think of them as decisions but as default settings. But if you are aware of your team’s differences, you can make decisions that support introverts, too. Let me share four tips on how to brainstorm in a way that will help ensure all team members are able to contribute, with  inclusive team meetings. Share Your Key Questions I used to have a boss who loved “pop-up” meetings. Whenever he was stuck on a question, he’d call the staff team together and ask for ideas. I liked the feeling of being included, but especially when I was new, one minute’s warning wasn’t enough time to think of anything worth sharing. Team meetings like this are often worth avoiding entirely. The solution â€" of course â€" is an agenda. But not just any agenda. The standard agenda is written in a terse, descriptive way. You can do better than that. Write each agenda item as a question to solve. So if you want to brainstorm about how to reduce customer service hold times, don’t write “customer hold times.” Instead, in your agenda write “How do we shorten our customer service hold times and improve our brand experience?” By framing the question, you put a tighter focus on the discussion you want to prompt and orient the conversation toward problem-solving. Next, share the agenda a day or two in advance. This allows people time and space to think independently about the question you’ll be discussing. That extra day could make the difference between new staff members being able to contribute or just observe. It could also have a profound effect on your experienced team members of different temperaments. An impromptu team meeting to brainstorm ideas works well for extroverts who thrive in the act now, fight-or-flight mode. But it will provoke anxiety in introverts who prefer to rest and ruminate before responding. Present a visual agenda An ideal way to build and share this kind of agenda is with a tool like MindMeister. MindMeister allows you to build a visual, color-coded meeting agenda using an online mind map. Your team members can pull up the agenda wherever they have internet access, so they can mentally prepare for the meeting from the leisure of their home, the subway, or wherever they do their best thinking. Visualize your meeting agenda Try MindMeister Ask Team Members Individually Team meetings are often dominated by one or two meeting tyrants.” (They’re the ones doing 70 percent of the talking.) They aren’t bad people; they might just not be aware of what they’re doing. After a while, this becomes a group pattern. The dominant speakers can even get annoyed that they’re always expected to do the talking. Just being aware of that trap will help you guard against it, but thats not enough. Literally asking people, by name, for their opinion will ensure that all voices are heard. Some people are less assertive than others. Some have softer voices. Whatever the reason, not everyone is comfortable fighting for the floor, but they will happily speak up if you offer the opportunity to them. If you’ve shared the questions in advance and asked attendees to prepare their ideas, there’s also less of a risk that you’re putting them on the spot. After all, an unwillingness to shout shouldn’t disqualify someone from contributing an idea. Make Your Brainstorm Digital It was established a while back that brainstorming through an electronic interface can produce more and better ideas than face-to-face brainstorming sessions. Yet face-to-face brainstorming is still the dominant form. There are some unique benefits that face-to-face meetings offer, but one big downside is the aforementioned meeting domination. In brainstorming, its called production blocking. When team members must compete for the sole attention of the group, it creates a narrow idea funnel that advantages extroverts and disadvantages everyone else, even if their great ideas are better. That’s where the opportunity to brainstorm online, on platforms like MindMeister, can really shine through. MindMeister allows team members to generate ideas simultaneously, which eliminates that funnel. Also, in changing the medium, online brainstorming engages people who are more comfortable expressing their ideas in writing. After all, speaking in public is something a lot of people would rather avoid if they can help it. Reopen the agenda you shared within MindMeister ahead of the meeting and continue adding to it throughout the brainstorm. There are many ways you can take effective meeting notes but using an online mind map allows your team to add notes, attach documents and provide comments, all in real-time. Turn Your Inclusive Meeting into Action Finally, nothing encourages people to speak up more than someone actually listening to them. By immediately translating brainstorming ideas into action items, you are confirming to your team that their input won’t be ignored or forgotten. The integration between online mind mapping tool, MindMeister and task management tool,  MeisterTask  makes this process painless. Using the integration, you can convert the same mind map you used to provide an agenda and take notes during your brainstorm, into actionable to-dos. To do this, create a corresponding Project in task management tool, MeisterTask. Then, during the meeting and as a team, you can decide on which ideas to take forward as actionable tasks. Using the integration between MindMeister and MeisterTask, you can  automatically populate those chosen ideas as assigned tasks in MeisterTask. From there, ideas can be assigned due dates, commented on and tracked, as they move across your Project Board from ideation to completion. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can ensure the ideas from your inclusive team meeting are seen through. Simple. Keep Thinking Building a culture of inclusive excellence can be a massive undertaking, and making your brainstorming process more inclusive is just one part of that. But it’s an important one. However, when you see it working, you might just wonder how many other ways your business could be a little more excellent. Do you have any team meeting tips? Essay on Contrasting Yeats’ Second Coming and Shelleys...

Contrasting Yeats’ Second Coming and Shelleys Ozymandias William Butler Yeats specialized in the early Modernists style of literature. Coming just out of the Late Victorian age, Yeats used strong literary and historic elements in literary form to evoke his symbolic message in The Second Coming. Through the use of his theme of the new Apocalypse, (lecture notes on Early 20th Century Modernism) he imagined the world was coming into a state of unsurity from the post-WWI Modernist experience. The war left people in a state of chaos, and although the war was meant to bring people a sense of hope for no more wars in the future, it did far more damage then good, especially in peoples minds. The time in the Modernist era was†¦show more content†¦Possibly due to the war efforts in WWI, people saw the destruction and the lack of progression it brought the world; a second coming of the rough beast†¦/slouching towards Bethlehem (Yeats, Longman p. 2329, ll. 21-22), or in other words slouching towards religion. I think this because ea rlier in his stanza, Yeats speaks about twenty centuries of stony sleep/ Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle (Yeats, Longman p. 2329: ll. 19-20), which leads me to think of the two thousand years religion had a grip on peoples lives, and then as the more Modern generation became more and more separated from religion by its rocking cradle, the rough beast took hold of the people and took the place of religions dominancy in society. Now, peoples ideas became separated from the Biblical interpretation of things, and instead took on a more personal outlook and interpretation of its own as to what the meaning of all these things (WWI) meant. Chaos then took place, and religion lost its stronghold for good. The centre [could]not hold the people in religion, the rough beast (chaos) became their dominant concern. This may be contrasted to Percy Bysshe Shelleys poem Ozymandias, continuing the theme of the loss of authority. The Sphinx figure of ancient Egypt is illustrated

Marketing A Sports Organization Free Essays

When watching football on television, we get so sidetracked in the game and in the players that we forget about another part of the team. The marketing team is a large part of the sports team. Without the group of people who help get the recognition, sales, promotions, the football team would have a more difficult time surviving. We will write a custom essay sample on Marketing A Sports Organization or any similar topic only for you Order Now The marketing mix is one of the most often used phrases in marketing. The four marketing tactics, also known as the four â€Å"P’s,† are price, product, place, and promotion. Marketingteacher.com compares the marketing mix to that of a cake mix. All of the ingredients are essential to having the positive outcome that is desired.   If the cake needs more sugar, you can add more sugar, if it needs more milk, you can add more milk. The same thing applies to the marketing mix.   Perhaps the price needs to be altered for that positive outcome. Any of the tactics can be altered to suit the product and to get the outcome that is desired. When applying the marketing mix, the kind of organization that we are dealing with has to be considered. There is a difference between an amateur sports organization and a professional sports organization. In order to properly assess the commonalties and differences among the marketing mix developed for Diving Canada (Amateur Sport Organization) and the Toronto Blue Jays (Professional Sport Organization), it is imperative that one has a true understanding of the four elements that drives the marketing mix. The marketing mix was developed as a means to provide marketers with a strategy that would allow them to blend together various factors in order to achieve an organization’s objectives. To successfully implement this strategy, marketers must address the four specific tactics, or â€Å"ingredients† that will make the strategy work. Price is the factor that allows marketers to add value (a numerical representation) on the goods and services they are offering based on their ability to stimulate demand. Product on the other hand, refers to the tangible (good) physical aspect or service that encompasses such things as; brand name, functionality or packaging. Conversely, place relates to the specific geographical location that marketers feel is most appropriate to distribute their product/service to the general public. In order to engage in a successful deliverance, marketers must properly plan tactful promotional strategies that will inform their targeted market with the necessary information to make a purchase. If the aforementioned is utilized effectively, marketers will be able to achieve their organization’s goal in an efficient and productive manner According to www.wharton.universia.net, Juan Manuel de Toro, a professor at the IESE business school said that marketing for a sport’s organization should be, â€Å"Orientated toward consumers. It’s about thinking, deciding and acting in terms of the final consumer.†Ã‚   He said that as a result to this, â€Å"you have to know who your consumers are, and what they want and need. As much as possible, you have to tailor your offer to their needs, so you can get to know them and provide them with a worthwhile benefit. The orientation is toward the market, not to the product.† For instance, diving is growing to be very popular in Canada. According to www.diving.ca/english/html/about.htm, Canada is the number one diving nation in the world. Emphasizing that Canada is known for its diving is important.   This will appeal to the emotional aspect of the marketing. It gives a sense of pride. When it comes to sports, pride sells. There are many organizations that would like to partner with one of the sports that Canada is known for. Sponsorship can make or break a sports marketing plan. Because the team is not necessarily a business and has different purposes than a business does, the marketing for a sports team is different. People watch sports for entertainment, and largely for the emotional aspect of it. There is some emotional reason why each person becomes passionate for sports. Whether it was a family sport for some, or whether they were athletes in the sport when younger, the customer has a reason. To successfully market, the marketing team must get into the heads of their customers and find out what that reason is. According to www.wharton.universia.net, Toro said, â€Å"You are dealing with more than just a service; the sports consumer is looking for entertainment, diversion, passion, emotion; you have to consider his complete emotional dedication.† Sandro Rosell, who is the vice-president the Futbal Club Barcelona, argued, â€Å"In sports marketing, it is very hard to bring business needs and emotional needs together.† Although Rosell is right, it is hard to do, it is possible. For an amateur organization, the price can be a big problem.   There will be less money for marketing when the organization is amateur. What is used has to be used wisely. When seeking a partnership, there are a couple of options. Public or private organizations or state and local partnerships are often considered. One organization that would most likely be used for Diving Canada would be FINA, the world’s largest organization for aquatic sports. The sponsorship covers part of the price aspect. To gain a good idea of the price, penetration pricing could be considered. Penetration pricing is when the price is set low, on purpose, until interest is gained and then the price is raised higher. This would probably be a good idea for Diving Canada. Because it is an amateur sport, some customers might be a little leery of supporting it; however, because it is a sport that Canada is known for, they will most likely support it if the price is right. Once they begin supporting it and see how positive it is for them, the price can be raised and they will not refuse. Promotion for an amateur sports organization can be somewhat tricky. Sponsorship is found in promotion as well as the price. Without the sponsors supporting the team, it is difficult to have the promotion that is necessary. Since Diving Canada’s organization is more about achievement than money, they are not as well known as the Blue Jays. According to http://pr.e-agency.com/pdf/sports_division.pdf, one way to promote a team like the Diving Canada is to have a website devoted to them where they would gain large exposure. While this does cost extra money, the website believes that the price would be worth it in the end. A professional sport organization such as the Toronto Blue Jays is an association that is part of a much larger family that stretches across North America. These organizations are limited in the amount of teams that are able to compete and encompass a huge consumer database consisting of fans, spectators, participants, employees, sponsorship companies and much more. The Toronto Blue Jays, a Toronto based baseball team, is one of the thirty members of this professional sport organization. Diving Canada on the other hand is considered to be a non for profit amateur sport that was created to facilitate the growth and development of diving as a sport in Canada. Although not as large or consumer driven, Diving Canada represents nine provincial diving associations consisting of sixty seven local diving clubs with over 4,000 performing athletes. The main goal of diving Canada is to â€Å"become the number one diving nation in the world.† Unlike the Toronto Blue Jays Association who are profit driven, Diving Canada’s mission is to â€Å"provide all divers, from entry level participants to Olympic and World champions, with the programs and services required to achieve personal excellence and self fulfillment.† Before distinguishing the differences and commonalities of their respective marketing mixes, it is important to understand the underlying differences between a professional and an amateur. Professionals, who participate in sports organizations such as the Toronto Blue Jays are usually required to encompass a large array of knowledge achieved through intensive training and practicing.   These individuals often have a large affect on society and are required to exploit their independence both in society and in the workplace. Furthermore, the single largest distinction between an amateur and a professional is the funding for the sport. Professionals are paid individuals who are part of a large organization, and are paid based on their active participation Amateurs, on the other hand usually refers to individuals who are not performing for money, but instead are doing so for self interest usually through an academic setting. Now that the differences between a paid professional and a working amateur, have been distinguished we discussion of the differences and similarities among the marketing mix can be continued. Sports â€Å"products† is the first part of the marketing mix that will be analyzed and discussed in relation to both The Toronto Blue Jays and Diving Canada. A sport product consists of a good or a service that is created for the purpose of providing a benefit to its many existing users (participants, sponsorship companies, spectators etc†¦). It can provide physical benefits which can be seen through its; its quality design, features, packaging, variety or it can provide intangible benefits, such as the excitement and thrill participants acquire when watching or attending their favorite sport game. Although Diving Canada is an amateur sport they share many of the same existing users. Both organizations have many participants providing entertainment for their fans (their consumers), while following specific rules and guidelines governed by officials, instructors, coaches, etc. Furthermore, both engage in acquiring sponsorships as a means to provide excess cash to run a successful event. Regarding the intangible benefits, there are many similarities as both organizations are proving entertainment for their spectators. However, one of the main differences is that participants in Diving Canada are competing for self-fulfillment (not getting paid), opposed to many of the players on the Toronto Blue Jays who participate for the swollen salary. Although both organizations are very competitive in nature, Diving Canada places a much larger emphasis on achieving personal excellence and self-satisfaction (individually) while the Toronto Blue Jays place a large emphasis on winning a championship as a whole rather than individual participation. Regarding the tangible aspects, there are many differences among the two organizations. There is much more variety offered by the Toronto Blue Jays seen through; the different field positions played (short stop, centre field, catcher, pitcher), equipment (bats, helmets, uniforms, gloves), demographics and viewing capabilities (radio, TV). Although, there is variety in Diving Canada, participants have limited equipment such as bathing suits or goggles, they differ by having much less exposure. TV and radio promotions are limited. The quality of entertainment is usually higher in professional sports, but can is too complex to judge as entertainment can only be judged in the eye of the beholder. Although both organizations design their sport wear to embody company logos, the Toronto Blue Jays place a much larger emphasis on its uniqueness as a way to drive sales and attract consumer purchases of uniforms, hats, gloves, etc†¦One of the biggest differences recognized among the two organizations is the brand name which is perceived through their logos. The Toronto Blue Jays have a much more distinguished and recognized logo compared to Diving Canada. Although Diving Canada does have a signature logo, recognized as widely as the Toronto Blue Jays due to the limited exposure, demand and publicity for the event. The largest difference between the Blue Jays and Diving Canada is money. However, in the words of Shaquille O’Neal, â€Å"I’m tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, [and] wear Reebok.† Though the two sports are extremely different in marketing, it is interesting to see how the same formula — price, place, promotion, and product, can be tailored to work successfully for both. Kodak’s Razor and Blade Pricing Strategy for Printers Essay Example

Kodak’s Razor and Blade Pricing Strategy for Printers Essay Eastman Kodak’s razor and blade pricing strategy is not expected to succeed in the short run.   Earlier this year, the company revealed that it would be introducing an inkjet printer in the price range of $150-$300, using ink cartridges that would be â€Å"priced more than 50% lower than those of incumbents (Christenson Anthony, 2007).†Ã‚   According to an article published in Forbes, â€Å"Kodaks approach has many of the hallmarks of disruptive innovation, giving it a great chance of creating a much-needed winning product.   But theres still a long way to go before the company can declare success (Christenson Anthony).† Kodak happens to follow the razor and blade pricing strategy for its inkjet printers.   Businesses such as Gillette, Wilkinson Sword, Schick, and Remington are known to have made millions of dollars using this pricing strategy.   These companies gave away their razors or sold them at prices that were lower than the costs of production, making money on the razor blades instead (â€Å"Razors,† 2007).   Inspired by the success of these companies, the leading manufacturers of printers such as HP, Lexmark International and Epson profitably applied the razor and blade pricing model by sacrificing profits on the hardware.   Instead, they made money on the printer cartridges – the consumable part of the product (Christenson Anthony). We will write a custom essay sample on Kodak’s Razor and Blade Pricing Strategy for Printers specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Kodak’s Razor and Blade Pricing Strategy for Printers specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Kodak’s Razor and Blade Pricing Strategy for Printers specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Kodak is turning around this approach by radically reducing the price of its printer cartridges rather than the hardware that it plans to sell.   Whereas competitors are selling ink cartridges for $30 or more, Kodak plans to sell them in the price range of $9.99 to $14.99.   According to the company, it is able to sell cheaper ink cartridges because it has found a way to produce them at lower costs than its competitors (Christenson Anthony). While the low prices of Kodak’s ink cartridges are sure to attract customers, the competitors of the company, such as HP, are already selling their printers at prices that are much lower than those of Kodak’s printers.   Moreover, thirty percent of the global ink market has already been taken over by â€Å"private label, recycled ink cartridges (Christenson Anthony).†Ã‚   These ink cartridges are generally ten to fifteen percent cheaper than the branded ones, and sold by retailers such as Staples and Internet vendors like Carrot Ink (Christenson Anthony).   Hence, the low prices of Kodak’s ink cartridges will not appear truly novel to the consumers. Kodak’s pricing strategy would also not succeed if its competitors reduce the prices of ink cartridges as well.   Even so, Kodak might find itself at the winning end if its entry into the printer market manages to grow the market.   The company is claiming that its Photo Value Pack would allow people to print pictures at home for only 10 cents – a cost that is almost sixty percent lower than that of using a system created by HP (Christenson Anthony).   With such claims, it is possible for Kodak to help the printer market grow by attracting more consumers to personal printers. Nevertheless, it is too early to say whether Kodak’s entry into the printer market would be a profitable one.   The razor and blade pricing strategy is surely a successful strategy.   All the same, Kodak is facing a number of obstacles, such as the market for recycled ink cartridges and the possibility that its competitors would follow its strategy.   If the printer market grows because of Kodak’s entry, the company would definitely benefit.   Still, it could take some time before we are able to witness the sure fire success of Kodak’s pricing strategy in the printer market, that is, if the company is eventually successful in its new venture.

Biometrics and crime triangle Essay Example

Biometrics and crime triangle Essay Example Biometrics and crime triangle Paper Biometrics and crime triangle Paper Biometric technology is becoming an integral element of law enforcement system. Despite the variety of forms, all biometric solutions are represented within one technological framework which is usually referred to as the means of â€Å"automated identification, or verification of identity through physiological, or behavioral traits† (Coleman, 1999). Biometric systems of suspect identification are actively used in various law enforcement procedures; these technologies have proved their effectiveness and reliability in all crime prevention activities. Biometric technologies and human analytical abilities go hand in hand, and compete to achieve excellent crime prevention results. However, even despite the significant benefits biometric technologies offer to law enforcement professionals, serious ethical issues should be addressed to make biometrics safe in use.   Thesis statement: biometrics has turned into the indispensable technological element of crime prevention, but future effectiveness of biometric solutions will be threatened, if specialists fail to address significant privacy and security gaps that currently exist in the area of biometric technology use. Biometric technology and the need to use biometrics in crime prevention Crime prevention cannot be effective without identification. Identification is the essential element of all crime prevention and law enforcement procedures. Contemporary technological advances, the development of internet-related crimes and terrorist threats require creating and implementing the whole set of new technological solutions. In crime prevention, â€Å"everything else is ultimately secondary to the need to identify† (Nieto, 2002). That is why biometrical systems of crime prevention are constantly improved to guarantee cost-effectiveness and relevance of crime prevention activities. Current network of law enforcement agencies cannot develop an effective infrastructure that would guarantee safe and effective storage of information. The importance of biometric identification is justified by the need to create a relevant, cost-effective and secure data storage system that would not infringe citizen rights but would guarantee speedy and easy identification of suspects. As a result, biometrics is gradually turning into a real industry, with law enforcement serving its target market. Face recognition, iris scan, and fingerprints identification software are the results of the thorough analytical work that are successfully implemented at all stages of crime prevention. As software manufacturers are fighting for their portion of law enforcement market, they are trying to offer more relevant biometric solutions that will meet the challenging requirements of the difficult criminal situation. â€Å"What biometrics offers now and in the future is the possibility of improving the overall ‘clear-up’ rate of crime, therefore increasing the confidence of the public in the system and their overall sense of security in society† (Nieto, 2002). In simpler terms, better biometric technology is the direct pathway towards security, public awareness about the benefits of biometrics in law enforcement, and better citizen acceptance and recognition of various types of identification software. Biometric applications satisfy the widest range of crime prevention needs, starting with face recognition and up to voice recognition and border control. In the contemporary context, face recognition, fingerprints, and iris scan represent the three most widely used types of biometric solutions. â€Å"No two fingerprints are alike. For this reason, law enforcement and the courts recognize fingerprints as unique personal identifiers† (Jain, Bolle, Pankanti, 1998). Human analytical skills are too limited to identify the differences between fingerprints and to convert this information into the instrument of coordinating crime prevention procedures. Fingerprints require special technological approach; the smallest pores and ridges on the human skin should be detected to guarantee the relevance of investigation (and as a result, crime prevention) results. Iris scan and face recognition require similar technological approaches. Thus, the state cannot neglect the importance of biometric technologies in its striving towards minimizing the number of crimes. Biometrics forms excellent combination between human analytical abilities and unbiased technology’s ability to identify, match, and analyze personal biometric information.

Commercial Limestone and Marble Explained

Commercial Limestone and Marble Explained We all encounter limestone buildings and marble statues during our lives. But the scientific and commercial definitions of these two rocks dont match. When geologists enter the stone dealers showroom, and when lay people go out in the field, each has to learn a new set of concepts for these two different names. Limerock Basics Limestone and marble are both limerocks, an old-fashioned industrial term for stone that is roasted to produce lime, or calcium oxide. Lime is a basic ingredient in cement and much else. (For more about lime, see About Cement and Concrete.) Cement makers look at limerock as chemical feedstock of greater or lesser purity and expense. Beyond that, they are indifferent to what geologists or stone dealers call it. The key mineral in limerock is calcite, or calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Any other mineral is undesirable, but a particularly bad one is dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2), which interferes with lime manufacture. In the past, quarriers, builders, craftsmen and manufacturers called limerock used for industrial purposes limestone. Thats how limestone got its name in the first place. Limerock suitable for structural and decorative purposes, like buildings and statuary, was called marble. The word comes from ancient Greek with the root meaning of strong stone. Those historic categories are relevant to todays commercial categories. Commercial Limestone and Marble Dealers in stone use limestone and marble to denote a category of stone that is softer than commercial granite (or basalt or sandstone) but does not split like slate. Commercial marble is more compact than commercial limestone, and it takes a good polish. In commercial use, these definitions arent limited to rocks made of calcite; dolomite rock is just as good. In fact, serpentinite too has minerals softer than granite and is considered a commercial marble under the names serpentine marble, green marble or verd antique. Commercial limestone has more pore space than commercial marble and does not wear as well. This makes it suitable for less demanding applications like walls and columns and patios. It may have some flat layering, but generally it has a plain appearance. It may be honed or polished smooth, but it is limited to a matte or satiny finish. Commercial marble is denser than commercial limestone, and its preferred for floors, doorways and steps. Light penetrates farther into it, giving marble a glowing translucency. It also commonly has attractive swirling patterns of light and dark, although pure white marble is also prized for statues, gravestones and decorative features. To add a bit of confusion, marble used to be called crystalline limestone in previous centuries. Its key feature is the ability to take a high finish. None of these categories mean what they mean to geologists. Geologic Limestone and Marble Geologists are careful to distinguish limestone from dolomite rock, classifying both of these carbonate rocks as sedimentary rocks. But with metamorphism both become marble, a metamorphic rock in which all the original mineral grains have been recrystallized. Limestone is not made of sediment derived from rocks, but instead generally consists of the calcite skeletons of microscopic organisms that lived in shallow seas. In some places its formed of tiny round grains called ooids, formed as calcite precipitates directly from seawater onto a seed particle. The warm seas around the islands of the Bahamas are an example of an area where limestone is forming today. Under gentle conditions underground that are not well understood, magnesium-bearing fluids may alter the calcite in limestone to dolomite. With deeper burial and higher pressure, dolomite rock and limestone both recrystallize into marble, wiping out any fossils or other traces of the original sedimentary environment. Which of these are the real limestone and marble? Im prejudiced in favor of geologists, but builders and carvers and lime makers have many centuries of history on their side. Just be careful about how you use these rock names.

See instructions - Statistics Project Example of interest in analyzing and strategizing on how to minimize the future occurrence of the occupational assaults and the impacts it has on the nursing staff. I was very keen on the previous findings in this study. In this article, the main aim was to add the prevalent data to the established literature and review other relevant articles in this field. The article is outstanding as it explores the issues that are related to the occupational health and the safety for the mental health nurses which is regarded as the occupational violence. In this appraisal study, research was carried out due to the recognition of the international nursing council about the increased violence in nursing. This was also supported by various studies in industries in Australia about the violence in the nursing industry that occurred on a weekly basis. From the report, the problem has become international as it affects all the nurses in the world. Furthermore, the study reveals that that violence in nursing is affected by several factors and other environmental factors. Thus, the study centered on demographics in the prevalence in relation to age, workplace, and gender as far as occupational violence is concerned. The article also centers on the perception of the staff in the management of occupational violence. In the article, ethical considerations were taken seriously as it was approved by the human research ethics committee. The study also involved a descriptive survey as it involved the nurses from both the psychiatric and the community based departments. The study was effective as it developed a questionnaire that was very comprehensive in its analysis. Finally, I would like to congratulate Mc Kinnon and cross for their analytical work in this article. Therefore, it is with gratitude that they may release another edition that focuses on nursing problems. McKinnon, B., Cross, W. (2008). Variation in Real Estate Prices and Macroeconomic Performance Assignment

Variation in Real Estate Prices and Macroeconomic Performance - Assignment Example The performance of the housing sector significantly affects the general economy’s performance. Most theories, however, presume that it is only the macroeconomic factors that affect the variations in house prices and not the reverse. According to the vector autoregressive (VAR) model built by Baffoe - Bonnie, there are complete relations between the housing sector and the general economy (Case et al. 15). The theory asserts that macroeconomic variables usually cause cycles in the prices of houses and the number of houses sold. If not brought to control, these effects may have adverse implications on the economy. Historically, changes in the prices of the real estate have been linked to changes in consumption in various ways. In the past, the slump in housing led to many empty houses and growing joblessness. Uncertainty about the consequences of declining home prices was also common in the past years. In the past - just like today, consumption or rather spending has been subject to people’s income. Economists Karl E. Case, John M. Quigley and Robert J. Shiller made annual observations in 14 countries since the past 25 years and in some U.S. states quarterly in the 1980s and 1990s. Their observation was that some the future incomes were kept in the assets, stocks, bonds, and property, where most people keep their riches (Case et al. 15). A drop in asset values made many homeowners poorer, so they lowered their expenditure and raised savings. When the assets grew, they spent more. The theoretical arguments of the vector autoregressive (VAR) model are thus valid. Economists have varying opinions on the consequences of varying house prices among the consumers. According to Carroll et al. (69), they disagree as to whether Americans will reduce their spending slowly or rapidly. On one side optimists, argue that the links between housing wealth and spending are much the same as for any other type of wealth, such as shares. They say

Cold War Manderin Essay -- Comparative, Ngo Dinh Diem, Seth Jacobs

The book, Cold War Mandarin Ngo Dinh Diem and the Origins of America’s War in Vietnam 1950-1963, by Seth Jacobs is a comprehensive retelling of the rise and fall of Ngo Dinh Diem’s government in South Vietnam. In that retelling Jacob focuses on the major events that took place in Vietnam as well as showed how America backed a leader that did nothing to booster his nation and led America into one of the worst wars in its history. The Diem regime was a corrupt and tyrannical government that used the United States’ fears of communism to push its own goals that ultimately led to its own demise. Jacob viewed the escalation of America’s involvement in Vietnam as the following, â€Å"The nine-year â€Å"experiment† that ended when Diem died was America’s crossover point from advice and support to active cobelligerency in a Vietnamese civil war† (8). Jacob in his book is very critical of the actions that both the Americans and Diem took in the establishment of South Vietnam. As the title of the book suggests, the author claims that Diem and his actions resulted in America becoming stuck in a war that would last over a decade. Diem, who was not very well known in either the United States as well as his own nation at the time the book starts in the early 1950s, was able to perpetuate himself into a position of power through use of both his faith as well as perpetuating generalized American fears. In the first chapter of his book, Jacobs looks at Diem’s early rise to power. Diem first worked under the French where he stood as a Minister of the Interior in the Bao Dai puppet government. Where Diem hated that the French who had control over Vietnam both economically as well as politically, one thing he hated more where the Viet Minh. The Vi... ... Ngo Dinh Diem and his regime. In Diems attempts to maintain a sense of national independence and ignoring American advisors in regards to how to manage his nation placed both himself and America in a very bad situation. Jacob broke down the reasons why Diem’s policies and decisions as head of state in Vietnam ultimately led to its demise, from his totalitarian policies and misuses of American funding/support. Jacobs does not put all blame on Diem but also points out that despite information gathered from American officials in Vietnam the American government supported a government that was unpopular and full of corruption. In the end Jacob reinforces his claim that the United States and their â€Å"Diem experiment† pushed America into a shifting relationship with Vietnam that would ultimately lock the nation into a state involvement that it could not back out of.

Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment Essay

Every single person has a personality that is unique to their persona, albeit they may look identical in appearance such as twins. Theories have been developed and fine-tuned throughout the last two centuries, and most notably by some of the more well-known psychologists of the last century. Alfred Alder, Carl Jung, and perhaps the most cited of the three theorizers is Sigmund Freud, compile three of the most noteworthy psychologists. Freud’s, Alder’s, and Jung’s theories may seem similar in several ways, but they are quite distinct from one another. Psychoanalytic Theories Freud characterizes the personality into three segments which are the id, ego and superego (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Freud argued that the id, a Latin word or ‘it’, was the very basic instincts and motivations (often called impulses) with which humans, like animals, are born with. The id, acting on the pleasure principle, reduces its inner tension by satisfying its desires. The ego, also known as the ‘I’, acting upon the reality principle, aims to plan, act, and adopt to solve real issues that arise in the reality of this world. The ego tends to consistently place in check the desires and motivations of the id. The superego, also known as the ‘over I’, is the realization of societal structure that has been set in place by the parental units and entities of the social community. The superego has conscious and unconscious moral forces that is similar to the conscience, but the superego follows ethical guidelines unconsciously (2012). Alderâ₠¬â„¢s theory was more complex than that of Freud, whose id was focused on the pleasure principle and sexuality. Instead, Alder theorized that the personality stressed unique motivations of each person and the individual’s apparent role in the social order (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Alder went on to develop the foundation for the identification of the superiority complex, inferiority complex,  organ inferiority, aggression drive, and masculine protest to name a few. Like the Freudian theory, the Jungian theory is also separates the human psyche into three different parts; the conscious ego, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Jung’s conscious ego is similar to Freud’s ego, however Jung believed that the ego was the conscious personality and represents the sense of one’s self. The personal unconscious is host to the feelings and thoughts that are not part of one’s cognizant awareness. The collective unconscious is a more profound level of unconsciousness that entails emotional symbols known as archetypes. Jung referred to archetypes as the embodiment of interpersonal emotional reactions of repetitive events (2012). I agree with Alder’s theory that the personality stresses motivations that are unique to each person. I also agree with Freud’s theory that the ego is consistently placing the id in a reality check. However, I do not agree with Freud’s thoughts on humans being born with basic instincts such as those of animals. Furthermore, I do not agree in Jung’s theory of collective unconsciousness. Stages of Freud’s Theory The stages of Freud’s personality theory are oral, anal, phallic, latency period, and genital stages (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). According to Freud, the oral stage is driven the need to satisfy hunger and thirst. While some infants quickly move past the weaning and focus their libido into other challenges, others develop an oral fixation that may result in issues with attachment, dependency, and perhaps even substance abuse. The anal stage occurs mainly when the child is two to three years old and learns self-control over their bowel movements (2012). Some children learn this self-control early on leading to a healthy aspect of their personality. However, children fixated on the anal stage tend to overlearn it or fight attempts to manage their bowel movements which may lead to passive-aggressiveness, obstinacy, or stinginess in their adulthood. The phallic stage usually occurs by age six and is when sexual energy is fixated on the genitals (2012). In analyzing themselves, children explore with gender identity and masturbation. However, a fixation in this stage may lead to an Oedipus Complex, in which the boy conflicts with the father and attaches with the mother, or Penis Envy, in which a girl ponders why she  does not have a penis and attaches to the father. According to Freud, the latency period usually occurs between ages six and eleven. This is a period of the childhood that Freud believed was not significant to the child’s personality (2012). Instead, he believed that it was when sexual urges were not directly expressed, but rather channeled into daily activities. Lastly, the genital stage is when the child has reached adolescence, usually after age 12. It is in this stage that a non-fixated adolescent will live a well-adjusted adult life of courtship, marriage, and parenting. However, deviant experiences during childhood potentially produce a variety of personality issues as an adult (2012). Freudian Defense Mechanisms Repression is a defense mechanism that thrusts hostile or frightening thoughts into the unconscious (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). One of these types of repression is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Many of our military veterans are returning home with this sometimes debilitating condition. During a flight operation over Afghanistan a plane carrying 23 military personnel is shot repeatedly causing integrity issues to the fuselage. Although no one is injured, having to do emergency landing and repair before enemy troops can locate them can have life-lasting issues. Denial is a defense mechanism that causes reality to seem untrue, despite overwhelming facts or evidence (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). A parent comes home to find their young adult child with a syringe in their arm, unconscious, and unresponsive, calls 911. When asked by police, the parents deny any drug use or social issues, and add that their child was always a ‘good’ kid. Displacement is a defense mechanism that shifts the burden of an individual’s fears and desires upon someone or something else (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). A drunk father comes home, steps on a toy, and uses his belt to beat his 10 year old boy. The boy then goes to school the next day and bullies the smaller kids. In this case, the father and the son both displaced their anger and frustrations on others. Sublimation is a defense mechanism that enables us to act out unacceptable thoughts or impulses through adequate behavior (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Someone that is angry or frustrated may choose to go to the gym and get a rigorous workout, thereby releasing that anger or frustration. Conclusion Freud, Adler, and Jung were psychologists that shared a similar belief and passion in deciphering personality concept. However, they also disagreed on the fundamentals of such personality constructs. Freud believed that the personalities developed through psychosexual development. Whereas, Adler believed in the more complex development through individual psychology. Even so, Jung believed in a deeper level of the psyche that involved emotional archetypes. Each of these theories has provided great progress in modern psychology and understanding of the personalities of each individual. While each of the theories may have flaws, each of the theories has its own merits that are noteworthy. Reference Friedman, H. S., & Schustack, M. W. (2012). The Deaf President Now Movement And Subsequent Gallaudet...

Extended Essay Draft Elisabeth Durgan May 2015 Thesis: â€Å"To what extent did the ‘Deaf President Now’ movement and subsequent Gallaudet University protest affect the Deaf community in America?† Table of Contents Introduction: The Deaf President Now movement and Gallaudet University protest did not only achieve its aims, this revolution brought unity to the Deaf Community and awareness to the general public. This revolution grew into a civil rights movement, consequently enacting legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and The Telecommunications Accessibility Enhancement Act of 1988, to benefit deaf citizens. The events of February- March 1988 are still a great source of pride and enlightenment that are still nostalgically looked back on by this generation of deaf citizens. The Deaf community can be described as being a relatively private community, consisting of many people with various ranges of hearing loss. Like any culture, the deaf have their own community, culture, language, and essentially a separate world from the hearing majority. However, it has only been in the last few decades that there has been awareness and acceptance of this culture, nevertheless there is not full acceptan ce and understanding of this community and deafness in

The white paint and the Sambo doll are symbols in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man that emphasizes the futility of finding one’s identity in a world that forces their perspectives onto him. After following Dr. Bledsoe’s wild goose chase to look for a job, the narrator finds himself at the Liberty Paint Plant, which is a factory that prides itself on making pure, â€Å"Optic White† paint (Ellison 217). The narrator is put to work as he begins mixing a black substance into a brown bucket that eventually turns into a brilliant white paint. However, the paint itself symbolizes the relationship between blacks and whites in society. In order to make the white paint, one requires 10 exact drops of the â€Å"dead black† liquid or else the mixture fails to become the pure white the factory demands (201). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The White Paint And The Sambo" essay for you Create order The factory (as well as the rest of society) depends on the efforts of both black and white men to manufacture white paint, but they suppress black efforts to gain equality with the overpowering bleakness of the white paint. It is only when the narrator accidentally uses remover on the boards and reveals the â€Å"brilliant white diffused with gray† that his boss Kimbro panics and tries to get the narrator to cover up the boards with the white paint (205). The removal of the white paint layer is representative to how America masked years of mistreatment and segregation of blacks behind the shining ideals about freedom and opportunity, leaving people like the narrator to chafe under the identities they are forced to fit into without exception. On the other hand, the Sambo doll symbolizes the controlling power of forced identities as well as the dampening of individualism by the white paint. After the narrator is thrust into a battle royale among his classmates, they are rewarded with another competition to pick up money from a rug. One of the white spectators mocks the boys, saying â€Å"[t]hat’s right, Sambo† when the M.C. assures them that the money is there for the boys to take (26). However, the rug is revealed to be electrified, causing a boy to spasm and â€Å"dance upon his back† after being thrown directly onto the rug (27). The Sambo doll is a caricature of a black slave that entertains their master and carries out their bidding. The man that nicknamed the boys Sambo refers to how the boys are only acting on the spectator’s will, as they first fought in a battle royale and then scramble for fake money like animals. Later in the novel, the narrator spies Clifton on the street selling cardboard Sambo dolls dancing in a â€Å"infuriatingly sensuous motion† as Clifton sang out his wares (431). When the narrator discovers later that the dolls are controlled by a string in the back, it emphasizes how blacks are at the mercy of white men despite their efforts to prove otherwise. Since the Brotherhood had already been limited in their protests and meetings, Clifton’s decision to sell Sambo dolls is much more effective, since the Sambo dolls are physically being controlled by Clifton’s movements, just as how narrator has been manipulated like a puppet by the white figures in his life such as Mr. Norton and the spectators from his high school graduation. With white paint from the Liberty Paint Plant demonstrating the function of blacks as tools for the fame and glory of white people and the Sambo dolls symbolizing white dominance through manipulation, the narrator is unable to define himself beyond what the world has portrayed as a black man. These symbols emphasize how one cannot become an individual without throwing away the masks that the world has provided, but to do so would mean changing systemic racism and discrimination within a lifetime.

Bite Me A Love Story Chapter 24 Free Essays

24. A Love Story? JODY It wasn’t the first time she’d crept out of a guy’s apartment in the middle of the night with her shoes in her hand, but it was the first time where the decision had been because she didn’t want to kill the guy. He was so little, so frail, so lonely. We will write a custom essay sample on Bite Me: A Love Story Chapter 24 or any similar topic only for you Order Now She had taken people before who had the black ring in their life aura like Okata’s, and they had thanked her. It had been mercy, relief, the end of pain, yet she couldn’t make herself do it. She’d left him there, not to die alone, although he probably would, and not because he had been so kind to her, saving her, which he had, but because the prints weren’t finished. He was a strange little man, a hermit and a swordsman, and he carried some great pain in him, but above all that, he was an artist, and she couldn’t bear to stop that. So she’d left. Now she was back. He sheathed his sword and tried to lift her to her feet. Her limbs still felt like they were on fire, and she could move only her right arm on her own. She nodded toward Bella’s pellet weapon. â€Å"Give it to me, Okata.† She made a grasping motion. He leaned her in a sitting position against the wrought-iron railing that surrounded the steps to his apartment, then retrieved the weapon and fit it into her hand. Then he held the barrel firmly and said something stern in Japanese. â€Å"No, I’m not going to off myself,† she said, and she smiled. He let go of the barrel of the gun and she sprayed Bella’s corpse with pellets until the gun stopped firing, then she threw the gun over the rail and motioned for Okata to help her into his apartment. Bella’s body was nothing more than slimy chunks of meat by the time Okata got her through the door. In the morning, when the sun hit it, there would be only a charred stain on the sidewalk with burned gobs of plastic that had been a Kevlar suit, shoes, and sunglasses. Okata helped her to the shower, where he rinsed out her wounds, then dried her off and retrieved the last bit of the pig’s blood, which he’d kept in the refrigerator. Jody felt a horrible twinge of guilt. He’d been waiting for her, probably had been outside looking for her when Bella had chased her around the corner. After she drank the blood, and her legs had healed enough to hold her weight, she went to his workbench and turned on the light. The last print was there. Not finished, but two of the woodblocks had been finished, the black and the red. There she was, in the shower, her red hair streaming behind her in the water, black bits of ash puddling at her feet. Okata was beside her, looking at the print critically, as if there was something he might have to fix at any second. She bent down and looked back from the angle of the print into his face. â€Å"Hey,† she said. â€Å"Thank you.† â€Å"Okay,† he said. â€Å"Sorry,† she said. FOO DOG Abby lay on the futon in the loft’s great room. The empty rat cages were stacked in the corner of the room and Foo had unscrewed one of the plywood panels over the windows to let some light in. He’d been monitoring Abby’s vital signs since six in the morning. At least she had vital signs. She hadn’t even started with those. At noon, she opened her eyes. â€Å"Foo, you dick, I’m mortal.† â€Å"You’re okay!† He threw his arms around her. She pushed him away. â€Å"Where’s Tommy? Where’s the Countess?† â€Å"Tommy’s in the bedroom. I don’t know where Jody is.† â€Å"She didn’t call?† â€Å"No.† â€Å"Fucksocks! Did you turn Tommy back, too?† â€Å"No. I started making his serum, but he didn’t want to do anything until they take care of the other vampire. We need to, though, Abby. He won’t live much longer if we don’t.† â€Å"I know. The pirate Rasta guy on the black ship told us. Other vampire? Only one?† â€Å"Rivera called while you were unconscious. The Animals took one of them down at the Safeway.† â€Å"Did you tell him to stay off the black ship?† â€Å"Tommy did.† â€Å"What about Chet?† â€Å"I don’t know.† â€Å"He could be-Hey, where’s my tail?† â€Å"It sort of fell off when you turned back to human.† â€Å"Did you save it?† â€Å"Well, no. I left it on the coffee table and when the sun came up, well, it sort of burned up.† â€Å"You burned up my tail? That was a part of me.† â€Å"It was a disgusting part of you.† â€Å"You’re such a racist, Foo. I’m glad we broke up.† â€Å"We did?† â€Å"We were going to, weren’t we? Wasn’t that what you wanted to talk about? About how I’m way too complex and mysterious for you and you need to return to your traditional science-nerd values and live in the Sunset with your parents, instead of the awesome love lair with your goddess-like vampire girlfriend, who will never do you again, even when you beg, even out of pity, no matter how fly your sexy manga hair is? Isn’t that what you were going to say?† â€Å"Not in so many words. I’m going to move to Berkeley. It’s hard, Abby-â€Å" â€Å"Well, save your breath, s’il vous pla;t, I’m over you. I will not be further abused by your toady banalities and whatnot.† â€Å"Your mom called. She wants you to come home.† â€Å"Yeah, that’s going to happen. Oh, what’s this, monkeys flying out of my tailless butt?† â€Å"She said they sent your report card. You passed Mr. Snavely’s biology class.† â€Å"I did?† â€Å"She said she almost fainted. Jared said it was your extra-credit project that did it. Why didn’t you tell me you took one of the rats to school with you?† â€Å"Well, I didn’t think it worked out that well. I mean, the rat was already vamped, so when I took him out of the shoe box, he just looked kind of dead. And Mr. Snavely was all, â€Å"‘Oh, that’s lovely, Allison, a dead rat.'† But it was sunny in biology lab, and all of a sudden my rat just spontaneously combusts, and I’m all, ‘Check it, bitches, spontaneous rodent combustion, it’s the wave of the future.'† â€Å"Well, because he couldn’t figure out how you did it, he passed you.† â€Å"I am the dark mistress of Biology One-oh-two. Fear me. Rawr!† she said. Then she kissed him hard, but not as hard as she had when she was a vampire, which was a relief, but then she pushed him away and slapped him. â€Å"Ouch. I didn’t think you were a slut.† â€Å"I know, that’s was our bittersweet break-up kiss. I will go grieve now until Lord Flood awakes and we resume the search for the Countess. I’m starving. Do you want to go get a sammy and a Starbucks? I have like ten grand in my messenger.† THE LOVE LAIR He awoke at sundown with her face in his mind’s eye and panic running up his spine. He bolted out of the bedroom into the great room, where Abby was hanging up the phone. â€Å"That was the Countess,† Abby said. â€Å"She’s okay. She’ll be here in a few minutes.† â€Å"And you’re okay? You’re alive. You have heat.† He could see the heat coming off her and the healthy life aura around her. â€Å"Yeah, thanks. Foo destroyed my tail.† She turned and looked to the kitchen. â€Å"The traitorous racist heartbreaking fucktard!† â€Å"Little harsh,† Tommy said. â€Å"He saved your life.† â€Å"Heartbroken. Grieving. Inconsolable. Tail’s gone. Going to have to get totally repierced and tattooed.† â€Å"But you showered and your eye makeup isn’t all racoony anymore.† â€Å"Thanks. I like the blood splatters on your pants.† â€Å"Hi,† said Foo Dog from the kitchen, where he was filling a syringe with what looked like blood. â€Å"I have your serum ready, whenever you’re ready.† â€Å"I’m not ready.† â€Å"You have to, you know.† The doorbell buzzed. Tommy keyed the intercom. â€Å"It’s me,† Jody said. He buzzed her in and she was at the top of the steps in an instant, then kissing him. He pushed her back and looked at her clothes, shredded at the elbows and knees, stained with blood. â€Å"What happened to you? Where were you?† â€Å"One of the old vampires? She ambushed me on a roof across from the black ship. That weapon they have did this. It’s horrible. We can’t let them get near us with that thing.† â€Å"How did you get away?† â€Å"I was hiding at the bottom of a pool, trying to figure out what to do, when Chet jumped her. I got out of there while Chet was dry-humping her.† â€Å"Yeah. Go Chet!† said Abby. â€Å"Abby!† Jody ran to Abby and hugged her, kissed her on the forehead. â€Å"I was so worried about you. You’re alive. Really alive.† â€Å"Yeah. Foo changed me back. I want to be nosferatu again.† They all turned to face Foo, who was still in the kitchen. â€Å"Can’t do it, Abs. You won’t survive a second time. I tried it on the rats. You’re only human.† â€Å"Doomed,† Abby said. â€Å"Jody,† Tommy said, â€Å"what about the vampire who attacked you?† â€Å"Gone. Destroyed. Someone rescued me just before she killed me. So there’s only one left, right?† â€Å"They’re all gone,† Tommy said. â€Å"Rivera called. The Animals got the other one. There’s only Elijah on the black ship.† Jody put her hand to his face. â€Å"Tommy, we have to talk.† â€Å"I know,† he said. Foo Dog said, â€Å"Jody, I have no way of knowing when Tommy might, uh, expire. He could go faster than Abby was going.† â€Å"Come with me.† Jody took Tommy’s hand and led him into the bedroom. â€Å"I’ve got to show you something. You two, do not come into this room, do you hear me?† TOMMY AND JODY â€Å"We can’t make crazy monkey love now, Jody. They’ll hear us, and we usually end up breaking all the furniture.† â€Å"You learned how to go to mist, when you were with Chet. You said you learned?† â€Å"Yeah, that’s how I got these clothes. They’re stupid, aren’t they?† â€Å"Tommy, the vampire, the old one, her name was Bella, she told me something. Kiss me. Kiss me and go to mist. Don’t think about it, don’t stop, just melt into the kiss.† She kissed him and felt him as he faded from solid, and followed him exactly, until they were a single entity, sharing every secret, every fear, every victory, everything, the very essence of who they were, wrapping around each other, winding through each other as each lived the other’s history, as every experience they had, they had together, with comfort and joy, with abandon and passion, without words or boundaries, and as often happens to two in love, time lost all meaning, and they might have stayed there, like that, forever. When they finally fell out of it they were naked, on the bed, giggling like insane children. â€Å"Wow,† Tommy said first. â€Å"Yeah,† she said. â€Å"So, Okata saved you?† â€Å"Yeah, he needed to save someone. He had always needed to save someone.† â€Å"I know. I’m okay with it, you know?† â€Å"Yeah, I know,† she said. â€Å"I can’t do it, Jody. It’s amazing, and I adore you, but I can’t do it.† â€Å"I know,† she said, because she did. â€Å"This is me now, Tommy. I like this, I like the night, I like the power. I like not being afraid. I was never anything until I was this. I love being this.† â€Å"I know,† he said. He knew that she had always been cute, but not beautiful. Always a little dissatisfied with who she was, worried about what men, or her mother, or anyone thought of her. But she was beautiful now. Strong. She was exactly what she wanted to be. He said, â€Å"I need the words, Jody. It’s who I am.† â€Å"I know.† â€Å"I’m not a vampire. I’m a writer. I came here to be a writer. I want to use gelatinous in a sentence. And not just once, but over and over. On the roof, under the moon, in an elevator, on the washing machine, and when I’m exhausted, I want to lay in my own gelatinous sweat and use gelatinous in a sentence until I pass out.† Jody said, â€Å"I don’t think gelatinous means what you think it means.† â€Å"It doesn’t matter. It’s what I need to do. I need to write something. I need to write my little Holocaust girl story.† â€Å"I thought it was a little girl growing up in the segregated South.† â€Å"Yeah, whatever. It’s important.† â€Å"You know I know this already, right?† â€Å"I know, but that’s what I’m saying, I need the words. I love you, but I need the words.† â€Å"I know,† she said. â€Å"Let’s go let Foo change you back into a word guy.† â€Å"And you’re going to go away?† â€Å"I have to.† â€Å"I know,† he said. â€Å"You know, I think that merging might have ruined me.† â€Å"Why?† â€Å"Because you’re lying there completely naked and I don’t want to sex you up.† â€Å"Really?† â€Å"Let me think about it. No, false alarm, I’m okay.† â€Å"C’mere, writer boy. Let’s break some furniture.† THE RAVEN â€Å"Praise Jah’s sweet love for given us a fired-haired snowy biscuit,† Kona said. â€Å"Welcome, me sweet deadie sistah. Welcome aboard.† â€Å"Mistress,† Jody said. â€Å"Sweet deadie mistress.† â€Å"Troot, mistress. Welcome aboard.† The ship was a wonder of technology and luxury. Kona had lent Foo Dog his security bracelet and Foo had gone aboard and reset the security so the ship didn’t kill anyone who set foot on board, then he and Kona had walked her through the ship showing her the thousand different ways it had been set to kill a person. It was an elegant, redundant death trap. â€Å"You’ll want to turn the systems back on,† Foo had said. â€Å"There’s a reason they had this kind of security.† Jody said good-bye and led him off the ship. Now that she had one of his UV lasers in one hand and a number of vacuum blood vials in the other she followed the ersatz Rastaman down to the deepest chamber of the ship, where Foo had not gone. They approached a wide, white, waterproof hatch with a small porthole and a heavy stainless-steel wheel securing it. Kona hit a light switch. â€Å"That make just a wee UV, mistress. Make dat dogheart bastid turn solid so he can’t sneak out.† Jody looked in the port and a face hit it with a snarl, leaving bloody spit on the thick glass. â€Å"Well, hello, pumpkin. How have you been?† The vampire snarled. It was Elijah, the old vampire who had turned her, turned them all, really, if the legend was true. But he looked like a wild animal now, naked, his fangs bared, snarling at the tiny window. â€Å"Can he hear me?† Jody asked. â€Å"Oh yeah, he hear. You got to tell him to go to the back of da room, ma. I’n’I can lock him back there with the second door. Like an airlock. Dat’s how we feed dat old buggah.† â€Å"Go to the back of the room, Elijah. I have something I need you to do.† The vampire snarled at her. â€Å"Okey dokey,† she said, and she put on her sunglasses, placed Foo’s laser against the glass, and promptly blasted Elijah’s right ear into ash. He roared at her. â€Å"Oh, I know that had to hurt. Hear that high whining sound, Elijah. That’s the laser recharging. Takes about a minute. When it’s done I’m going to burn off your willie unless you get your ancient ass to the back of the cell.† She smiled. â€Å"Shoots, brah, she a cold heart bitch don’t you know. You outta-shoulda do what she say, yeah?† The old vampire backed through the inside door, snarling, and Kona worked the switch, sealing it. Then he opened the heavy outer hatch. Jody placed the vacuum vials in the chamber, then said, â€Å"Okay, Elijah, I need you to fill these with that sweet, first-generation vampire blood.† They sealed the outer hatch, and Elijah snarled and resisted, but after having his other ear burned off, relented. Twenty minutes later Jody was holding the four vials of Elijah’s blood and Elijah was lapping two quarts of tuna blood out of a stainless-steel bowl. â€Å"He be all right,† Kona said. â€Å"Dem ear heal up in minutes and he be back in the mystic fo’ weeks.† â€Å"And how long to get the rest of the art supplies onto the Raven?† she asked. â€Å"It’s all on board, mistress.† â€Å"Then cast off, Cap’n.† â€Å"Aye, aye, mistress.† Jody turned to Okata, who had stood silently, his eyes wide, watching the whole scene. â€Å"These are for you,† she said, holding out the vials. â€Å"I’ll help you. I hope you like night scenes. You’re going to have a lot of prints to make. But you’ll have time.† â€Å"Okay,† said the swordsman, with a smile.
